The Institute is a cross-college unit that seeks to advance equity through STEM research. It has over 600 UMass affiliates of faculty, students, and some staff, and over 400 affiliates outside of UMass (from universities, community colleges, non-profit organizations, and private industries). We hold 12-15 events every semester with anywhere from 15-40 attendees at each event and we run grant competitions every year, which involve reviewing 10-20 grant applications. We put out ENewsletters, EBulletins, video, and other forms of communications (emails, social media) regularly. During the summer, we run an online 6-week Leadership Academy for 50 students. Student program assistants are a key part of our small team in these efforts. Duties include: --managing membership lists, list-serves, website updates and calendaring --communicating with faculty, staff, and student affiliates by email (we use a software called myemma) and social media posts --preparing, attending, and tracking information about meetings – scheduling (on ZOOM or in person), taking attendance, and providing technical support; if in person then also -- reserving rooms, ordering food, and set up and break down of conference rooms --promotions – designing visuals, powerpoint presentations, and writing news items for presentations, emails, social media posts, website, and news outlets --keeping track of expenses We are looking for a student with some work experience. While we don’t expect the students to know all of these programs, they should have proficiency in some of them and have the capacity to learn them relatively quickly. Student program assistants must be detail-oriented, organized, and hold strong oral and written communication skills. They must be able to work independently to complete tasks. The job requires being able to juggle multiple responsibilities and work on time-sensitive tasks in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment. Program Assistants must be regularly available by email 9am-5pm during working days, self-motivated, hardworking, and a reliable team-player. Students should be available to work during scheduled meetings (we will work to accommodate student schedules as much as possible). Other than scheduled meetings, students may work flexible hours and do not have to work at our office space. We are looking for someone to join our small team, hopefully for a few years! A previous work study student went on to an internship with a local industry through connections she made through us, and we aim to provide such connections to those who are on our team in the future too!
